4 tips for natural skincare for babies and toddlers
Posted by Hanna Savioja onAn increasing number of children under the age of one are suffering from various skin issues. Atopic dermatitis and different allergic reactions have significantly increased in young children, even in infants. Often, there is a deeper cause behind many skin problems and symptoms than just the wrong cream. While creams may not eliminate the root cause of the problem, it is possible to alleviate the symptoms and improve the child’s comfort. Natural and minimalist skincare products are a good choice for taking care of young children’s skin. Keep these things in mind when caring for your child’s skin.
1. DDoes every flare-up need immediate treatment?
Not all skin symptoms necessarily require immediate treatment unless they cause significant discomfort to the child or worsen quickly. Many mild skin symptoms, such as slight redness or dryness, can sometimes heal on their own without immediate intervention. However, it is important to monitor the situation and ensure that the symptoms do not worsen or become more severe. If you suspect an allergic reaction, intense itching, or other concerning symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional so that appropriate treatment can be initiated promptly.
New foods and changing life situations can also cause skin changes in young children. Instead of aggressively trying to correct mild skin changes with cosmetic products or, in the worst case, with medicinal creams, it's better to stay calm and monitor the situation before trying out many new products. Over-treatment, strong chemicals, and medications can lead to unexpected new skin and health problems.
2. Only wash when the child is truly dirty.
Children's sebum and sweat production are not the same as in adults. A child or baby does not need to be bathed every day or even several times a week.
Warm water always dissolves protective substances and natural microbiota from the skin's surface. When the skin's protective barrier is disturbed by frequent washing and cleansers, the skin can dry out more easily and become prone to various imbalances and infections.
It's better to add bath oil to the child's bathwater rather than foaming cleansers. Washing children's hair with just water is usually sufficient. Why would humans be the only animals on the planet that need daily washing to stay healthy?
3. Avoid strong fragrances in all products
Synthetic fragrances have already taken over the toy market, and sometimes it feels difficult to avoid them. Avoid scented cleaning products, air fresheners, laundry detergents and fabric softeners, as well as cosmetic products with fragrances. In products, synthetic fragrances are often listed in the ingredients as 'parfym,' 'parfume,' or 'fragrance.' Fragrances and preservatives are the most common causes of product-related sensitivities. Be cautious about using essential oils with young children as well.
4. Get a good basic oil
An organic, cold-pressed vegetable oil is a good choice for a family with children due to its versatility. Avoid mineral oil-based baby oils from brands and pharmacies. Mineral oils and basic creams may give the feeling of soft skin, but they do not provide much nourishment to the skin or do anything significant. They help lock in moisture, but if the skin is already dry, the cream will not be beneficial.
You can identify mineral oils in the ingredient list by these names: Mineral Oil, Paraffinum Liquidum, Petrolatum, Cera Microcristallina, Ozokerite, Ceresin, Paraffin, Synthetic Wax, Isoparaffin, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Polyisobutene.
